SUMMARY:FIRE IN THE PINES DEMONSTRATION
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:FROM THE CREEK TO THE CANOPY: A LEGACY OF FIRE\n\nTwo hundred y
ears ago\, the lifeblood of Furnace Town was the iron\npulled from the dep
ths of the Nassawango Creek. Laborers harvested bog\niron from the creek\,
but to transform that raw ore into iron\, they\nneeded the intense\, cont
rolled heat of the iron furnace. This process\nmade the furnace the center
of the community\, turning the natural\nresources of the Pocomoke into th
e tools and products of a growing\nnation. \n\nToday\, we are once again
using controlled fire as a vital tool for our\ncommunity—but this time\,
the goal is conservation rather than\nindustry. We are proud to serve as
the host site for a unique\neducational demonstration led by the MARYLAND
 DNR and TALL TIMBERS\n[https://talltimbers.org/?zlinkid=2585d794-b364-4fc3
-af73-d66a212d1686].\nOn Saturday\, May 30\, these experts will be conduct
ing a prescribed\nburn in the adjacent Pocomoke State Forest. Just as the
village here\nonce carefully managed fire to power an industry\, today’s
\nconservationists use it as a scientific tool to protect wildlife\nhabita
ts and ensure the health of the very ecosystem that once\nsustained our hi
storic village.  \n\nThis event offers a rare opportunity to watch moder
n fire ecology in\naction from the safety of our historic grounds. You’l
l learn the\nscience behind prescribed fire and see how it is used to sust
ain\nhabitat. \n\nWE ARE STILL PLANNING THE DETAILS AND LOGISTICS OF THIS
EVENT! MARK\nYOUR CALENDARS AND WE WILL SEND OUT MORE INFORMATION SOON. P
